Our 2004 Update—Page 1

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

After a very busy year, we are spending a relatively quiet December at home in San Francisco. It’s nice to kick back and enjoy this time of year at home.

If you are browsing this page, we assume that you want a few details to catch you up on our exploits. We would hate to disappoint you! The following are a few highlights of our year and our travels. Putting it together is kind of fun. We reminisce and really put the 12 months into perspective.

HOME

Our home dominated a lot of the year for us. First off, our three kids, Jocko, George & Benny are terrific! Jocko turned three in October and has really matured into a marvelous dog. Benny & George both had their 4th birthday earlier in the year and are healthy and a lot of fun.

At the very tail end of 2003, December 24th to be exact, we completed a project to add a new deck and hot tub to the house. Our friends Mike Bichanich and Rocky Wood drove up from sunny San Diego and spent 10 miserable days in the cold foggy rain of SF to get the project done in time for Christmas. At 9am on the 23rd, a crane hoisted the 400-gallon tub over the house and by 10pm that night, we were all soaking in the hot, bubbly waters.

Mike and Rocky came back up to soak up the June sun. They will probably never venture back again in the winter. They built an amazing fence to replace the one that had crumbled under the weight of an enormous grape vine. The new structure is solid redwood and will last a lifetime, if not longer.

Our holiday 2003 remodel went so well, we decided to roll the dice again and shoot for another December project. What we learned was that sometimes you roll boxcars and sometimes you roll snake eyes… We have been dreaming about ripping out the wall-to-wall carpeting in the house since we bought it and we finally bit the bullet this month. The old carpeting was ripped out, but we have hit a bit of a supply-chain problem and the new flooring isn’t available yet. We’ve decided the bare concrete floors will have to be very stylish until the new wood can be installed. It will look great when it is done! We don’t miss the carpeting one bit.

TECHNOLOGY

In August of 2002, Daniel received a Cochlear Implant in his right ear. Soon thereafter he owned his own cell phone, attended concerts without interpreters and gobbled up audio books like they were going out of style. After a lot of thought, he decided to go ahead and get another implant. Now Daniel is wearing two implants and his speech and comprehension continue to improve. You can follow his thoughts on this process in his blog!

WORK

Daniel’s exciting news is another promotion at software giant Oracle. He manages several key initiatives for his department -- no, he's not leading the PeopleSoft merger!

Dave works for software startup Aravo Solutions as the Director of Client Services. This year he has managed several of the company’s key projects including successful customer engagements with the US Navy and Accenture.

EXTRA CURRICULAR

We both joined the board of Deaf Communities Together, a 501(c)3 organization that provides non profit status to various deaf community service groups. Daniel’s involvement with DCT goes back many years.

Daniel participated in the very first ever “Hairrison Street Fair” as a volunteer. The event was a smash success and sure to be back for many years to come.

Dave continued his volunteer work with GRGR/West and their annual “Real Bad” party. This year’s event raised a record-breaking $80,000 all of which was donated to Marriage Equality California and AIDS Emergency Fund. Dave has accepted the role of Event Chair for Real Bad 2005.
